Google, Meta and TikTok are suing California to block a law restricting social media features offered to children younger than 16. The law is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027.

The disputed features include feeds designed to keep users engaged, videos that start playing automatically and pages that load more content as a child scrolls. The restrictions target how platforms present material to young users.

For families, the important date is January 1. The companies have asked a court to stop enforcement; filing the suit alone does not change the effective date.
