Voters in Washington and Colorado approved ballot measures restricting participation by transgender students in school sports, according to the Associated Press. The two measures use different rules to determine who can compete.
Washington’s Initiative 638 limits participation in female sports to students assigned female at birth and calls for verification by a health care provider. In Colorado, Proposition 134 requires schools and athletic associations to classify sports as male, female or coed and restricts eligibility for sex-specific teams.
The votes put implementation questions in front of schools, athletic associations and families. The ballot results alone do not establish when an individual school will issue new registration instructions.
